 A few years ago when we were experimenting with these low-power radios, we purchased a simple mast and tripod from and put up a small ground plain vertical antenna at our base camp at an elevation of about 16 feet above ground--that installation VASTLY improved the quality of our audio and the distance of the communication. Here are some questions and tips to consider if you plan to get FRS radios: How often do you plan to use the radios for? If it is only going to be used for limited purposes, you might save some money and get a scaled down model. If however you plan to use them extensively, a few extra bucks up front may make you a happier camper. For extensive users, also consider the battery used to power the FRS radio - you might want to get a model that uses rechargeable batteries, otherwise you will spend some extra money for batteries. The third thing I would think about is electrical power. What kind of batteries does the unit require? Are the batteries rechargable? What are the recharging units, if any, like? Can I recharge the radio from my car''s lighter socket? If I can''t recharge the batteries, what kind of batteries do I need and what will their life be if I leave the unit on for several hours? Consider electrical power. The fourth thing to consider is range. Many radios are advertised as being a 5-mile or a 2-mile radio, but that is only on a flat landscape under ideal conditions. If you can, either conduct a real-world test on the radios or ask someone who has actually used them for a while what kind of range they have. I have found two nice uses for my own portable radio set. A long-distance drive with two cars can really benefit from these. The two drivers or others in the two cars can stay in touch rather well as long as the cars are in reasonable range. I would highly recommend having a set of FRS radios on hand. They are a lot of fun to use and they are a good communications tool. walkie talkies can communicate with several people at once and don''t always require additional antennas because they are built-in.
